Boards & Commissions

About Boards & Commissions

The City of Durango has many boards and commissions, each with specific responsibilities as detailed in the City Charter, the City of Durango Code of Ordinances or the enacting Resolution.  Each Board and Commission makes recommendations to the City Council and City staff on matters related to its area of responsibility.

Individuals and groups may present issues to any of the advisory boards or commissions, as each provides opportunities for public comment at its meetings.

Becoming a member of a board or commission is an excellent way to become active in the decision-making process of City government and offers citizens an opportunity to provide expertise in areas of individual interest.  All positions are voluntary and vary in length of terms and time commitments.

Who is eligible to apply to a board or commission?

Generally, applicants must reside within the Durango City limits. Six boards have exceptions:

  • Durango-La Plata County Airport Commission
  • Design Review Board
  • Library Advisory Board
  • Natural Land Preservation Advisory Board
  • Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
  • Multi-modal Advisory Board

An individual's eligibility for any City Board or Commission may vary depending on the vacancy available at the time.

How do I apply?

Applications may be obtained online, from the City Manager's Office at 949 East 2nd Avenue, or by calling 970-375-5005.

Submit your application by the advertised deadline.  You will be contacted regarding a time to interview with the members of City Council.

How do I know if I was appointed to a board or commission?

Once City Council has voted and an appointment has been made at a regular meeting of the City Council, each applicant will receive a letter notifying him or her of their appointment status.

What happens if I am not appointed?

Your application will be kept on file in the City Manager's Office for one year, and should another vacancy occur, you will be contacted and asked if you wish to have your application considered for the new vacancy. Do not be discouraged if you are not selected to serve on a board at this time. Many current board members will tell you that they applied several times before being appointed.
