Licensing

Sales Tax Licensing

Sales tax licensing is administered by the City Clerk's Office. Both a city and state sales tax license are required to sell retail merchandise anywhere within the City limits.

The City of Durango can collect a 3% city sales tax in addition to the county and state sales taxes.

Sales Tax Licenses are required for businesses involved with:

  • storage
  • use
  • consumption
  • selling
  • leasing
  • delivering in this City, including:
    • retail sales
    • telecommunication services
    • gas and electric services
    • food or drink served or furnished
    • motel and hotel accommodations

Application for a sales tax license is made through the City Clerk's Office.  Sales tax licenses must be renewed annually to remain active (O-2009-19).

Lodging

City hotels, motels, and inns in the City collect a lodging tax of 2%. Like the sales tax license, city and state licensing is needed for lodgers' tax. The city license fee for this license is $25.

The burden of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act rests with the business owner and operator.

State Sales Tax License

The Colorado Department of Revenue collects state and county taxes. For state applications and general information regarding conducting business in the State of Colorado, visit the Colorado Secretary of State Business Center or call 303-894-2200.

County Requirements

La Plata County requires no business licensure except for liquor-licensed outlets at this time; but new businesses may need to obtain a land use review. For more information call the La Plata County Planning Office at 970-382-6263.
